Instructions for completing the Local Scholarship Application

Any senior planning for a postsecondary education is strongly encouraged to apply for the local scholarships available through Breckenridge Community Schools.  The scholarships are available to students planning for a two-year college, four-year college, trade or vocational school.  Scholarship requirements vary, some are based on financial need, some are based on grade point and others are not based on either.  Any senior going to school after high school should apply.

Applications must be turned in to Mrs. Royer in the high school office by:
3:00pm on Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Late applications will not be considered.

  1. Neatness counts! This application will be the cover sheet for the rest of your information. It must be typed using this website. Click here for the on-line application that you can type into and then print out. You will be asked to open or save a Microsoft Word document called scholarapp.doc. If you choose to open it, you may enter the information, and print it out right then. If you choose to save the file to your computer, you can edit it later to enter the information, and then print it out. Use the <tab> key to move from field to field in the application form. To answer the Yes/No questions use the <space bar> to place an X in the correct box.
  2. Provide the best information available to you at this point. If you are not sure about your choice of school or field of study, give the best information you have right now. It is OK to tell the committee that you are still deciding between schools. It is also OK to say that you are undecided as to a career choice. You might want to indicate general career areas you are considering.
  3. Your community service work does not need to be detailed. Give us a general idea of the kinds of volunteer work you have done. Include estimates of hours spent at this work.
  4. Your resume should be updated and revised to answer the questions asked on this application.
  5. The essay should be typed and free of spelling and grammatical errors. The essay should be two to five paragraphs, double spaced with 1" side, top, and bottom margins, using Times New Roman 12 point font - about one page long. It is important to tell the Scholarship Committee about your future goals. The Scholarship Committee will be assessing your ability to write a good essay.
  6. Ask for letters of recommendation immediately. These letters should indicate that you would be a good candidate for a scholarship, not a general recommendation letter. The letters of recommendation should not be from a relative or a scholarship committee member. You will need two current letters of recommendation, one may come from a school faculty member, and at least one should be from a community person. Coaches can be considered either a "school" or "community" person. When you ask someone to write a letter for you, it helps to give those people a copy of your current resume and be sure to tell him or her the due date of the application. Letters of recommendation can be given to you or they can be mailed to the school (attn: Mrs. Royer). The school address is P.O. Box 217, Breckenridge, MI 48615.
